I'm just surprised that he thinks nobody knew about this before. He's acting like he's made a huge discovery for humanity but the subject of trans fat and hydrogenated oils has been debated endlessly, as long as I can remember. I don't know how he can claim the public had no knowledge of it. Health officials have been warning people about it forever, but most don't think its any worse than standard old butter, (which of course, is just another kind of fat).

Okay. Let's not get confused here.

The man doesn't want Oreos banned, he wants them to stop using Transfats (sp?), which is apparently really bad stuff (I'll be honest, I don't know).

He was on The Today Show yesterday to clear things up.

Katie said that Oreo responded by saying that they are trying to come up with a Trans free Oreo but haven't succeded yet, and that Oreo offers a Reduced Fat version with 1/2 the Transfats. He responded by pointing out that the Newman's Own company (Paul Newman's food company that donates all it's profits to charity) not only makes an Oreo type cookie that is Transfat free, but in taste test has been shown to taste just as good as regular Oreos. He posed the question, "If they [Newman's Own] can do it, why can't Nabisco?" And that's a good question.

Won't stop me from eating them, though I'll give the Newman's Own ones a try now.

He also pointed out that Oreos are marketed to kids, who may not be informed enough to know to stay away from Transfats. He said, "Until I filed this lawsuit, how many people even knew what a Transfat was, never mind that it was bad for you?" He also feels they shouldn't be offered in schools (I agree there).

Oh, and he also pointed out that web searches for Transfat info increased 5 times since he filed his lawsuit.

Who hasn't? This lawyer-person is saying he wants them banned in California because Kraft wasn't upfront with the consumer about the oils used in the making of the cookie aren't the healthiest...

I couldn't believe that this story was on Pardon the Iinteruption, the sports show in ESPN today either...

But trans-fatty whatevers are indeed bad for you. Can't truely be digested, linked to cancer, just plain scarey! Nature never intended us to eat that crap, yet it's everywhere!
Oh well. Like it's been said, it wasn't a secret or anything, he's just grabbing headlines on a slow news day.
